Fin de Siecle Newport Estate
Newport, RI
On extremely compressed schedules of just eleven weeks and nine and a half weeks respectively, Parker Construction renovated the dining room and kitchen of this historic Georgian revival mansion in Newport. Both rooms were recreated to match their historic precedents as originally imagined by famed designer Ogden Codman, a difficult task given that only one photograph of each room has survived.
In the dining room the walls were completely gutted, rebuilt, plastered, painted, and then adorned with extensive custom decorative plaster mouldings throughout — these features were fabricated using the same methods as were used a century ago when the home was originally built. Additionally, a built-in side table was faux-painted to match the original French rouge stone fireplace.
The kitchen is entirely bespoke — a custom range imported from France; custom faucets for both the chef’s kitchen and pantry were sourced from England to compliment the custom soap stone sinks; and a custom rolled steel hood and pot rack was fabricated to match the original style.
In addition to these two impressive and ornate rooms, Parker Construction also retrofit the home for a new elevator, upgraded the home’s utilities and generator, and restored much of the exterior masonry including a set of marble steps leading to the back lawn.
